The red and white life ring / lifebuoy has a rich maritime history dating back to the early 19th century. Invented by a British Navy lieutenant, it became the standard for sea rescue in 1855 when the British Maritime Search and Rescue Organization officially adopted it. While early lifebuoys were cork-filled, the modern version features lightweight, foam-filled construction for durability and reliability.
